Strange things on the Red Dragon Flower

Writer's picture: Scott MScott M

Nothing to do with carnivorous plants except it's pot is next to the sarracenia planter.

The Red Dragon Flower, Huernia schneideriana, is a beautiful succulent that grows well in Texas. I got a couple plants at a garage ale last year and now its everywhere. It's small red flowers are quite impressive.

I took a look at the flower with the pencam and found something troubling. Something is crawling around in it. It appears to be a fly larva. Or to put it more colloquially, there's a maggot in my flower.

What's going on here?

The flower smells like carrion to attracts flies for pollination. Perhaps a fly left an egg while pollinating or perhaps this is normal.
